I’ve been away from it all, enjoying the sun in Curaçao. So nice to go to the sun and get some vitamins. I dived for the first time in my life and I must say, I found it more exciting than I thought. Dealing with fear was a thing for me, though. In this blog, I tell you how I overcame that.
Breathing through your mouth and out through your nose, I’m not used to that.
We had to sit at the bottom of a pool with the scuba tank and all the equipment and my mind at one point said I wanted to go back up. It’s not natural to stay in the water that long it said to me.
I thought it was too exciting at first
Part of me actually didn’t want to continue. It found it too exciting. Another part of me said it will be fine and we can always go up this way, so much can’t go wrong.
I had agreed with myself that I could take small steps and if I wasn’t doing it, all I had to do was go to the surface and get help from my instructor.
After the pool, we were allowed to walk over with the scuba tank and lead into the sea. Pooh say, what a weight! In the sea, we let the air out of our vest and we sank down. But I didn’t go far, because I wasn’t heavy enough. I got even more lead.
In the pool we had already gotten used to breathing through the scuba tank, in the sea it was all automatic as well. I forgot everything when we were underwater, what a beautiful world it was! I enjoyed it immensely and forgot all my worries.
Dealing with fear, go as deep as you like
When you go into the depths of yourself, it can also be exciting. You may wonder if you can handle it. Whether you’re not drowning in that cesspool you’d prefer to keep closed. Whether you will still get back up.
But just like diving, you can go as deep as you want and agree with yourself that if it gets too intense, you can go right back up. You don’t have to do anything and you decide for yourself.
Learning to deal with fear step by step
By attending a workshop, you also have an experienced facilitator to help you with your process. Who can take you by the hand when things get too spicy for you. You are not alone. You don’t have to do anything; you are in charge of your own process. You don’t have to go any deeper than you want to.
Once you are down, you discover that your inner world is also full of splendor. Every part in you carries a piece of gold for you.
There in those depths find your true self, your pearls, your inner strength, your love for yourself, your authenticity. If you have found that, then you can shape your life from flow and shine your light on the world.
Because of diving, I can now cope better with fear. For example, by just clearing your goggles of water to be able to see well again, or putting some air in your diving suit, making it a little bit lighter for yourself again, so that you go back to the surface a little bit more.
