What an impressive place it is, at high altitude, with many buildings, the basilica, the sacred geometry on the floor in front of the basilica and the image of the black Madonna.
The statue somehow attracted me. We could only see the statue at the end of the day because it is very popular to visit. You even have to buy a ticket for it.
Synchronicity brought me to this magical place. Stories go around that the holy grail is/was found here. I do like stories like this, it has something magical about it.
The black Madonna as an archetype…
Since I work a lot with archetypes, I thought of the black Madonna as an archetype and started doing some research. A world opened up for me, so much has been written about the black Madonna as an archetype.
There are many black Madonna’s in Europe, especially in Southern Europe, I have also seen several black Madonna’s, for example in Chartres, but I never paid much attention to them.
Rediscovering our deepest essence…
The Black Madonna calls us to go to the dark in ourselves, down to the depths within ourselves, to the earth to find ourselves again in our deepest essence.
She confronts us with the illusions we have built up about ourselves, our ignorance, until we arrive at our own divine nature. Getting rid of everything we are not brings us to our true nature.
Sometimes it forces us to go into the depths because of experiences we have in our lives, there is no escape. I do recognize this through the experiences in my life through loss, through being quite ill for a period of time, which threw me back on myself.
By going into the depths of the earth, to stir, to let go of everything, to look your own shadow pieces in the eye, brings you more to inner balance, more enlightenment.
The archetype for feminine strength…
The black Madonna is also sometimes associated with Kali, the goddess who stands for destruction and death. Without death, there is no renewal. When you can let certain things in your life die, something new will be born.
So you could also think of her as a goddess. The myth of the Dark Goddess also goes back to ancient Egypt where Isis was worshiped, or to the other Goddesses like Sekhmet, Baba Yaga, Morrigan, Lilith….and many others.
Chaos and creativity are two elements associated with the Black Madonna. She represents death and rebirth. She represents the divine feminine who does not belittle herself, but is fully in her power.
By attuning to the archetype of the Dark Goddess, we come face to face with hidden healing forces in the unconscious.
No more hiding away but shining light into ourselves…
When we deny the dark in ourselves, we are denying parts of ourselves that have been deeply hidden away, by our upbringing, culture and how women have been treated over the past hundreds of years.
Descending into the deepest caverns of ourselves creates healing and wholeness, not only of ourselves, but also of the whole of humanity. After all, we are all one.
The black Madonna contributes to healing our sexuality and making sexual pleasure and connection sacred again, beyond the damaged conceptions of sexuality in our Western society.
The dark feminine means hidden or unknown, not evil or bad. It cannot and will not fit into restrictive social structures.
Treasure digging within ourselves …
Treasure digging for our lost parts, finding the gold again within ourselves, of all that lives within us is part of the Black Madonna.
When you connect the earthly with the spiritual you will experience a sacred union of dark and light, which strengthens life force and leads to more energy.
To experience more wholeness you can connect with the black Madonna, the dark Goddess. Discover what she has to tell and teach you.
One way to connect yourself with the Black Madonna is to create a SoulCollage® card about her and do the “I am the one” process.
